Retroid Pocket Flip Revealed At Last

It’s finally shutting the rumors down, with a clamshell design

The gaming world is abuzz with excitement thanks to the recent teaser trailer for a new Retroid-branded retro gaming handheld, dubbed the Retroid Pocket Flip. This exciting new console boasts a clamshell form factor reminiscent of classic gaming devices from years gone by, such as the Nintendo DS lineup and of course, the Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP. Watch the teaser trailer below:

Though the trailer doesn’t reveal any information about the device’s specs, we do know that it will feature a USB-C port, a headphone jack, and a mini-HDMI port, as well as R3/L3 buttons and Nintendo 3DS-style sliding analogue sticks. It would have been nice to see recessed slots for full analog sticks instead, but it should work for the majority of games without issue.

One of the most exciting features of this upcoming console is the inclusion of a clamshell design. We haven’t seen anything like this in quite a while, and certainly not at the proposed build quality we can see in the trailer. The clamshell form factor is excellent for a portable handheld, saving space when stored, but also providing the added benefit of built-in protection!

The R3/L3 buttons are also an exciting addition to the new Retroid handheld. These buttons will provide more control options than were available on classic consoles, allowing for even more immersive gaming experiences. Meanwhile, the sliding analogue sticks will offer a tactile and intuitive way to control your in-game characters and vehicles.

But what else can we expect from this exciting new console? While the teaser trailer doesn’t reveal any new information, there are rumors floating around about what specs this device could feature. It’s possible that it could boast the same performance as the Retroid Pocket 3+, which is specc’d out with the following:

  • Processor: Tiger T310 SoC
  • CPU: 1xA75 @2.0GHz 3xA55 @1.8GHz
  • GPU: PowerVR GE8300
  • RAM: 2GB/3GB Storage: 32GB
  • Wifi 2.4G+5G
  • Os: Android 9.0
  • Product Size: 6.02*3.18*0.78 inch
  • Screen Size: 3.5″

That means we can play all the 8, 16, and 32-bit era games with ease, and begin approaching a vast majority of the PlayStation 2 and GameCube libraries as well. Let’s hope they overclock that processor a bit with the extra space that’s now available to get a little bit extra juice out of it.

While we don’t know anything yet about the details of this new device, it’s clear that the Retroid team is taking retro gaming seriously. With a design that pays homage to classic consoles, as well as modern features that will make gaming easier and more enjoyable, this new handheld is sure to be a hit among retro gaming enthusiasts, so as long as the device’s specifications are up to par.
